The story takes us back to 1939. Austria has been invaded by the Nazis from Germany. Two Jewish sisters, 12-year-old Stephie Steiner and 8-year-old Nellie, are in danger because of their religion. Their parents therefore send the kids to Sweden to keep them safe. They hope that the family will be able to reunite in a short time. But, soon after the sisters arrive in Sweden, World War II breaks out in Europe, preventing Stephie and Nellie's parents from joining their daughters.

While Nellie quickly adjusts to her new surroundings, Stephie has a much harder time. Will she ever adapt to this new country, its language and way of life? And what will become of the parents she left behind?
